Combining a higher-power version of PreAct’s general purpose LiDAR sensor, Mojave, and the AI capabilities of Nvidia’s Jetson Nano, Moab is best suited for education, healthcare, smart cities, ITS, agriculture, retail, security applications. With its flexible integration, Moab supports wireless communication (4G LTE, WIFI) and multiple I/O (Ethernet, USB-C), and can stand up to industrial indoor applications. Moab’s strong AI-on-the-edge capability extends its applications to people counting in retail settings, inventory management, public transportation monitoring for safety, patient monitoring, and much more. The integrated “all in one box” packaging means that developers just need to plug Moab into their system and start developing.

Flash storage optimization

Using flash storage optimization, this method streamlines large LLMs. Another major development will occur when Apple incorporates sophisticated AI inside the iPhone. Two new research papers showcased this month by the Cupertino-based tech behemoth declared substantial advancements in AI. The study uncovered novel methods for efficient inference of language models and 3D avatars. This research delves into the difficulty of keeping model parameters in flash memory, running them into DRAM on demand, and executing LLMs that use more DRAM than is available. Data transfers from flash memory can be optimized with the use of the Inference Cost Model, which takes flash and DRAM characteristics into account.

To back up their claim, the researchers have utilized models like Falcon 7B and OPT 6.7B. According to the research, compared to conventional approaches, the models increased CPU speed by 4-5 times and GPU speed by 20-25 times.

Why the users should be happy?

Users of Apple products, such as the iPhone, may profit substantially from the results of the study on efficient LLM inference with limited memory. AI-Enabled Solutions Are the Key to Help Cellular Operators Reach Carbon Reduction Targets

Today, everything is connected – from phones to watches to cars – modernizing industries, and cellular connectivity changing the way we live, work, and learn. But, at the same time carriers are building out the infrastructure to support this enhanced connectivity, they are setting aggressive decarbonization goals, including public Net Zero ambitions.

What that means for communications service providers (CSPs) is that they can no longer view performance as the sole criterion for success. The telecommunications network of today must be powerful and nimble – and it needs to be sustainable, too. And, AI is the key to creating and managing energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprint while continuing to deliver the high-quality service customers demand.

RAN Represents the Bulk of Energy Usage – And an Opportunity for Savings

The telecom industry is in a unique position when it comes to decarbonization. Advanced connectivity is key to enabling carbon reduction in other industries, and there is also a tremendous opportunity for the telecom industry to lead by example by cutting its own emissions. 

The Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment accounts for 80% of the energy use for an operator, based on a benchmarking study by the GSMA. Yet the GSMA also reports 62 operators, representing 61% of the industry (by revenue), have committed to a science-based carbon reduction target, pledging to reduce direct and indirect emissions by 2030.

As networks become increasingly complex, managing energy usage can’t be done manually. Software that monitors for periods of low usage to shut down unnecessary equipment is a good first step, but purely reactive solutions won’t be enough to manage traffic demands while cutting emissions.

AI is the missing ingredient that will help CSPs gain insights to inform ongoing energy savings, while also driving real-time efficiencies through operational orchestration.

AI is what will take network energy management from reactive to predictive, making decisions based on the network’s needs.

For example, AI functions can decide, based on data, what resources will be needed in the coming hours and days, and if all the capacity in the frequency bands within the RAN will be needed. They can then turn off or on different frequency bands or other resources according to predicted demand.

Because, AI programs dynamically learn, adapt, and act accordingly, these tools enable operators to control cells dynamically and in turn, serve dynamic traffic patterns instead of just peak traffic.

Taking things to the next level, CSPs will be able to use AI and machine learning predictions to build digital twins of the RAN environment, allowing them to test and develop energy-saving features without any risk to their actual, live network. 

AI Can Identify and Enable Savings Beyond Network Operations

And it’s not just the day-to-day network management where AI tools can help reduce energy usage. They can also help operators diagnose and resolve issues remotely, getting things right the first time to reduce unplanned downtime – as well as achieving carbon reduction through fewer maintenance truck rolls. And, with AI insights, CSPs can identify where new cell sites or other resources should be deployed, creating efficiencies with deployments and equipment buildouts.  

Another area where AI can enable energy savings is in the passive equipment at individual cellular sites, things like climate control or air conditioning.

AI solutions can help companies manage the energy infrastructure on-site more intelligently. They can also help in areas where demand response programs are enabled, or when government regulations or tariffs are in place to control peak demand.

For example, AI-powered applications can switch to battery power during times when tariffs are higher (peak load shifting), or when the grid power usage reaches a certain power grid alternating current (AC) limit.

There is a real urgency behind the need for CSPs to make operations more energy efficient, as the telecom industry works to meet self-declared sustainability targets as well as government mandates. Yet, there can be an understandable hesitancy to enact some energy-saving solutions, for fear of disrupting networks or reducing the quality of service. Luckily, AI can be a solution for both these issues – giving CSPs the tools they need to manage complex network functions in the most efficient manner possible, while also collecting and analyzing data to test and refine new applications in a virtual environment, such as a digital twin. Cellular networks need to get smarter to meet sustainability expectations without affecting customer experience – and AI is the key to making it work.

Why 5G Standalone technology is critical for some industries:

The key benefits of 5G are around latency, speed and capacity – which are ideal for a wide range of use cases:

  • Consistent low latency (low level of delays) for example is critical for autonomous vehicles, safety systems, manufacturing, and augmented reality.
  • Speed of data transmission is a basic ‘must have’ for applications that rely heavily on video, but significantly enhance service opportunities when associated with low latency.

With the advancement of 5G Standalone technology, the latency is significantly reduced, meaning the speed by which this information travels is significantly increased and much faster than on previous networks such as 3G and 4G, significantly improving customer experience on a wide range of services.

What makes 5G Standalone stand out in these scenarios is that its base stations can provide a greater coverage area than Wi-Fi access points. As a result, fewer base stations are needed to cover a given area, which in turn helps increase any solution’s overall reliability and make it much more cost efficient.

The agreement reflects CNS’s investment focus on technology leadership areas, and the active portfolio management of others. CNS has executed a clear strategy over the past two years to grow faster than the market by establishing technology leadership and reorienting investment toward strategic areas of 5G Core, secure autonomous operations, private wireless and edge, network as code, and SaaS. The deal follows Nokia announcements earlier this year to divest its VitalQIP products to Cygna Labs Corp and to make Red Hat the primary infrastructure platform for Nokia Core Network applications.

Lumine Group acquires, manages, and builds industry-specific software, focused in the telecom and media space. With its strong balance sheet and market capitalization, Lumine Group intends to operate DM and SMP as a standalone business, which will be called Motive.

Approximately 500 Nokia Device Management and Service Management Platform employees are expected to transfer to Lumine Group as part of the deal. Both companies will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition and business continuity.

The deal is valued at EUR 185 million, which includes a contingent consideration of up to EUR 35 million based on the performance of the business during the first year following close. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2024, subject to certain terms, conditions, and consultations with works council or other employee representative bodies where required by law.

Nokia Device Management software capabilities help communication service providers remotely manage home broadband access devices, as well as IoT sensors and devices from a variety of different vendors; while the company’s Service Management Platform improves customer care service, with coverage spanning more than 150 deployments worldwide and more than 1 billion devices under management.

Nokia announced it has successfully completed a proof of concept (PoC) of Quantum-Safe Networks (QSN) in a complex optical network ring topology across three locations in Greece with HellasQCI, the Greek National Quantum Communication Infrastructure Consortium. Nokia successfully demonstrated hybrid key generation using both classic and quantum physics to generate and distribute Quantum-Safe keys for encrypted optical services. The goal of the PoC was to run use cases with the HellasQCI consortium members from government, research and education, defense, law enforcement and private sector critical infrastructure owners to ensure Quantum-Safe connectivity infrastructure.

The PoC was performed on a ring connecting three nodes in GRNET’s Data Center, the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Network Operations Center (NOC), and the NKUA Department of Informatics and Telecommunications (DIT), Optics Communications and Photonic Technology Laboratory (OPTCOMMS-PTL).

The positive potential of quantum computing is enormous. Today, governments and research organizations are investing in the technology to address issues such as sustainability, defense, and other societal challenges. Enterprises are using it across industries for applications like advanced financial computations, shaping the future of electric vehicles, or to better understand the impact of climate change on the power grid. However, the development of quantum computing also introduces an ability for this technology to easily penetrate systems previously regarded as secure, for example, by breaking existing encryption. This threat could easily damage life sustaining critical infrastructure. Hence, there is an urgent need to ensure networks are ready for quantum attacks through consortiums like HellasQCI who conduct rigorous tests and trials on their systems before bad actors can attempt to leverage quantum computing, overwriting current encryption technologies.

The HellasQCI consortium consists of 14 public organizations and private corporations, and is led by GRNET as project coordinator and NKUA as its technical coordinator. GRNET operates under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, providing networking, cloud computing, high-performance computing, and e-Infrastructures. It connects more than 150 organizations across 50 cities and serves hundreds of thousands of users daily in public administration, education, research, health and culture.

The Nokia QSN solution showcased the value added by the Nokia Security Management Server (SMS) to orchestrate Quantum-Safe keys and provide continuous monitoring and management of quantum secured connectivity. This particular SMS is the Quantum-Safe Key orchestrator, managing key requests and assuring Quantum-Safe services for the given crypto period. Upon continuous monitoring of Quantum-Safe connectivity service, the system’s SMS can increase secured connectivity resiliency automatically by reverting to classic physics-based keys in case of issues on the QKD layer.

To demonstrate interoperability, Aira set up an end-to-end configuration for the energy management use case test, using a VIAVI TeraVM network emulator to emulate a multi-layer 5G network. The Aira rApp runs atop the VMware cRIC which is connected to the TeraVM emulator, the source of network KPIs. The Aira rApp receives the required KPIs through the R1 interface from the VMware cRIC DME, and then stores the data in an Amazon S3 storage bucket and DynamoDB on AWS. The rApp applies ML algorithms and determines optimal energy efficient configurations from these KPIs, generates new network configuration management (CM) settings and provides new network CM back to VIAVI TeraVM to minimize the power consumption without impacting the QoS, based on the defined threshold.

“Aira is built on the premise that the application of ML to all layers of the RAN infrastructure stack can deliver breakthrough performance benefits to the operator community. What we have been able to achieve here showcases three very important things – the power of the Open RAN movement to accelerate innovation; the extraordinary potential for ML in cutting-edge wireless applications in 4G and 5G cellular networks; and the ability to inter-operate in a multi-vendor end-to-end test environment,” said Anand Chandrasekher, co-founder and CEO of Aira Technologies. “We look forward to continuing our work with VMware to make cellular networks significantly more energy efficient.”

Multi-layer cellular 5G network deployment typically features underlay coverage bands and overlay capacity bands. There are instances when capacity bands are not utilized, and keeping them on leads to unnecessary energy consumption. For any given cell, however, there is an optimal active band combination that minimizes power consumption while still meeting the throughput demands of the users attached to the radio unit (RU). This is a non-trivial problem to solve, since the throughput demands of the cell vary with time, and new cell configurations cannot be implemented too frequently. This is precisely the type of problem to which Machine Learning (ML) techniques can be applied, to increase the accuracy of the decision-making process.

Aira’s ML-based Dynamic Radio Network Management application solves this problem by using ML models to predict wireless network traffic demand, and choosing the active band combination that jointly optimizes power consumption and user experience. The rApp will receive RAN contextual information (e.g., DRB UL/DL throughput, PRB utilization) via the R1 interface to the non-RT RIC and provide new configuration management (CM) data back to the network emulator through Service Management and Orchestration (SMO).

The i14y Lab invited select vendors to participate in a plugfest to test multi-vendor solutions in a neutral third-party environment.

O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFests are periodic events organized and co-sponsored by O-RAN ALLIANCE to enable efficient progress of the O-RAN ecosystem through well-organized testing and integration. Vendors and providers come together to test, evaluate and verify their products and solutions.
