What is “5G”?

5G refers to the fifth generation of mobile networks. After 1G,2G, 3G, and 4G networks, this is the next generation of wireless technology. With the advent of 5G, a new type of network is possible, one that may theoretically link up any machines, objects, and gadgets.

According to Ericsson’s “5G: The Next Wave” report, 5G adoption is inflation-resilient. 510 million smartphone users could upgrade to a 5G subscription; 80% of 5G users not returning to 4G usage. Despite the lightning speed of adoption, only 70% of 5G users are satisfied with the service availability and customer experience. Increasing 5G connectivity coverage can quadruple customer service compared to the existing 4G infrastructure.

Multi-gigabit per second (Gbps) peak data rates, ultra-low latency, enhanced dependability, huge network capacity, more availability, and a more consistent user experience are all goals of 5G wireless technology. New user experiences and industry connections are made possible by increased performance and efficiency.

Below is a survey by Deloitte depicting 5G capability.

What fundamental technologies underpin 5G networks?

5G is based on OFDM (Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing), a way of modulating a digital transmission across several distinct channels to decrease interference. 5G employs the 5G NR air interface and the OFDM underlying technology. Sub-6 GHz and mmWave are only two examples of the higher bandwidth technologies used by 5G. 5G OFDM is a mobile networking standard that builds on the success of 4G LTE. However, the new 5G NR air interface may further augment OFDM to give a considerably higher degree of flexibility and scalability.

5G Impact India - PwC India

5G will increase bandwidth by using more of the available spectrum, from the current sub-3 GHz used by 4G up to 100 GHz and beyond. Both sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies can support 5G’s operation, giving users access to the technology’s extraordinary capacity, multi-Gbps speed, and low latency. In addition to improving upon the mobile broadband services offered created can branch out into uncharted service territories, such as providing mission-critical communications and linking the vast Internet of Things. This is made possible by many cutting-edge approaches to designing the air interface for 5G NR, such as a novel self-contained TDD subframe layout.

The 5G Transition

  • First generation (1G): This technology was established in the 1980s and was the standard used for analog telephony.
  • Second-generation (2G) networks typically take 40 minutes to download a 30 MB file.
It followed the 1G standard and made it possible for digital communications to be sent across cellular networks in the 1990s.
  • Third generation (3G); a 30 MB file typically takes 1 minute to download)
This technology, first seen in the 2000s, is often credited for ushering in the era of widespread smartphone internet access.
  • Fourth-generation (4G) networks allow users to download a 30 MB file in around 8 seconds.  Faster mobile data connectivity, via 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE), emerged in the next decade.

Groundbreaking Technology for Aging Populations Combines Its Technology With the Vast Library of Classical-Arts Streaming Service

MyndVR, the award-winning provider of VR-based, digital therapeutic experiences designed for the aging population, announced that it has partnered with Stage Access, the streaming service dedicated to music, ballet, opera and the performing arts.

AiThority Interview : AiThority Interview with Lori Anne, Director of Product Development & Management at Verizon

“Music engages more parts of the brain than almost any other activity”

This new partnership will allow MyndVR users to enjoy the dazzling Stage Access library of iconic brands and legendary performing-arts programs, and replicate the sensation of live opera, classical music and dance in a “virtual theater” setting. By partnering to deliver rich cultural and immersive experiences to senior-living communities or senior citizens at home, MyndVR and Stage Access continue to enrich lives and improve the health and wellness of our aging population.

“At MyndVR, we’re always looking for ways to enhance our content offerings and provide our seniors with exciting and new experiences that they might otherwise never get,” said Chris Brickler, CEO of MyndVR. “Partnering with Stage Access helps us to ensure that as adults age, they will continue to be able to access the performing arts, which is a privilege and a source of healing that we should all be able to enjoy. We look forward to our continued partnership with Stage Access.”

Research has shown that access to the performing arts can enhance the quality of life and well-being for older adults, helping to improve mood and socialization, reduce stress and support overall cognitive function. The virtual theater furthers MyndVR’s mission to maximize positive outcomes for older adults by promoting relaxation, relief, and enjoyment through the arts.

Stage Access is defining the performing arts in the digital era as the only company in North America that produces, distributes and licenses classical arts programming across multiple platforms. Among Stage Access’s slate of original productions are unique IMAX film experiences, which are premiering exclusively in cinemas, starring superstar opera soprano, Renée Fleming.

Fleming has long been a leading advocate for the study of the connection between performing arts and health. She is Artistic Adviser at Large to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and has spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts

“Music engages more parts of the brain than almost any other activity,” Fleming explained, “and evidence is mounting every day to support creative arts therapies for health applications throughout the life span. So providing arts content and experiences to older adults via VR devices is a welcome step forward in integrative healthcare, and it’s incredibly encouraging that this is beginning to be covered by health insurance.”

Stage Access CEO and founder Bruce H. Lipnick said its partnership with MyndVR furthers the streaming service’s mission of Bringing the Stage to You. “In all we do, we’re changing the way audiences engage with performing arts by introducing accessible, affordable ways to experience dance, opera and classical music. Our relationship with MyndVR is a fantastic step toward reaching new audiences in high-growth, underserved markets to improve their quality of life.”

Ohio Leads Nation in VR Education

Prisms’ VR math application used by over 50 districts and over 15,000 students in Ohio to help students love and succeed in math

Prisms VR, a learning platform pioneering a new paradigm for math education, celebrated Ohio’s leadership in virtual reality (VR) education, at its first Prisms of Reality Conference in Marysville, Ohio. Leading the nation in scaling experiential learning, Ohio launched Prisms’ VR new world math learning design in fall 2021 to over 50+ school districts + 15,000 students; it’s the first state to drive VR adoption to help raise math engagement and scores for all its students.

AiThority Interview : AiThority Interview with Lori Anne, Director of Product Development & Management at Verizon

“We are hearing students who’ve taken two years of Algebra say that they understand exponential functions for the first time, because they could clearly ‘see where they came from’ and could apply them to problems they care about”

Learning math through relevant problems, experienced in the first person, is the best way for students to understand the “why” and utility of math education, a question left unanswered for many students. Built for 8th to 11th grade math students, tutors and teachers, Prisms VR provides standards-aligned VR content and multiplayer collaborative learning environments that target bottleneck topics in secondary math. In 2021, Ohio schools introduced Prisms VR technology into math classrooms, empowering students to engage with complex math concepts at the root of failure, in an immersive and interactive way. The application creates virtual environments that simulate real-life scenarios, allowing students to connect to compelling problems through physical situations before abstracting up to symbolic notations, conventions and procedures.

The home of the first large-scale efficacy studies of the impact of VR on math learning outcomes, early studies across the state have shown double-digit growth outcomes on standards-aligned proficiencies, deeper conceptual understanding and confidence. The use of VR technology has also increased student motivation and purpose in math, making it a stimulating and rewarding subject to learn. “This is the first time that I’ve ever enjoyed going to math class,” one student said.

“We are hearing students who’ve taken two years of Algebra say that they understand exponential functions for the first time, because they could clearly ‘see where they came from’ and could apply them to problems they care about,” said Anurupa Ganguly, founder and chief executive officer at Prisms. “VR finally allows us to scale how we’ve always wanted to teach — using problems that mean something, plus movement and tactile visualizations that elucidate structure and great stories. It’s not a new technology fad; it’s the best shot we have at scaling humane teaching practices that don’t treat students as computer algorithms, but rather as rich sense-making beings. Using VR, we can take our students beyond the classroom walls and transport them to places and situations that are difficult, if not impossible, to replicate otherwise. Using this approach can engage and inspire learners, and it’s my mission to make learning more accessible and scalable than it ever has before.”

Superintendent of Montgomery County ESC, Shannon Cox said, “The immersion of students in virtual reality-enhanced lessons in schools or at home allows for the application of real-world learning to finally answer the question, ‘When will I ever use this?’. With Prisms VR, students connect their physical understanding to 3D simulations outside of their body. This new learning model, where students and children are active agents solving problems in the real world, is making our students love learning and helping teachers love teaching again.”

In an eSchool news article, educators expressed their engagement and augmentation of the content in which they are tasked to teach. “I have gained a deeper understanding of the authentic learning application of what I am teaching. I have been teaching this content for years and have now experienced the content in a more concrete, understandable way. I have an actual real response when students are asking why they need to learn what it is that I am teaching.” (Anonymous Teacher)

“Math is so fun now! It’s like going on a field trip without leaving the classroom. I love how it lets me experience things that I would never be able to see in real life. It makes learning so much more fun and interactive. I feel like I understand the material better when I can see it in 3D and interact with it. It’s definitely my favorite part of school now!” (Anonymous Student)

AR VR and AI- Generated Content Experiences among the Most Important Trends in Marketing

Businesses think extra features enhance online shopping – consumers disagree

  • Storyblok survey of 2,000 UK consumers and 200 UK business leaders reveals large divide between what e-commerce businesses think consumers want and what they actually need

  • 60% of consumers think ease of navigation is the most important factor in website user experience – only 28% of businesses cite improving website design as a priority

  • 70% of businesses say chatbots enhance the customer experience – only 22% of consumers see a benefit

  • Consumers and businesses agree that more payment methods and faster loading speeds are key to stopping purchases from being abandoned

  • American consumers and businesses believe AR/VR is the future of retail – Brits are more skeptical

Storyblok, the content management system (CMS) category leader that empowers both developers and content teams to create better content experiences across all digital channels, released research which reveals that many businesses misunderstand what consumers want out of online shopping.

The survey of 2,000 consumers and 200 business leaders at medium-sized e-commerce companies in the UK shows 70% of companies believe features such as chatbots enhance the customer experience, whereas only 22% of consumers agree.

When asked what the three most important factors are in the online experience, 60% of consumers said ease of navigation, 42% said simple design and 41% said visual appeal. In contrast, only 28% of businesses cited improving the design of their website as a priority, and 36% said they would add more features. 45% of businesses said they would add more payment options, but this was less of an issue for consumers with only 23% citing limited payment options as a reason to abandon a purchase.
Consumers and businesses agree that fast loading speeds are critical. 42% of consumers said they decide whether to stay on or leave a website within 10 seconds – 24% within 5 seconds. 46% of businesses said improving their website loading time was a top priority.

AiThority Interview : AiThority Interview with João Graça, Co-founder and CTO at Unbabel

Previous research by Storyblok underlines the importance of businesses understanding the priorities of their customers. Storyblok revealed in a study of 6,000 consumers and 500 business leaders across Europe and the US that 60% of consumers regularly abandon purchases due to poor website user experience, with businesses estimating it costs, on average, $72,000 in lost sales per year.

Dominik Angerer, CEO and Co-Founder of Storyblok, said: “There’s a lot of enthusiasm from businesses for more website features, but this is not shared by consumers – at least not yet. It’s important for businesses to continually ask themselves if the features they add to their websites really do enhance the customer experience. More is not always better, and what our research clearly shows is that businesses cannot lose sight of the fundamentals of good design, clear navigation, and fast loading speeds.”
Looking ahead, 26% of business leaders said they believe AR/VR experiences are the most important trend in marketing, followed by personalisation (21%), AI-generated content (24%), and automation (17%). Consumers are slightly more skeptical about the impact of AR/VR with only 32% stating it would encourage them to make a purchase and 24% saying they didn’t know. Americans were more enthusiastic with 57% agreeing it would encourage them to make a purchase.
